This weekend we celebrated my 59th birthday in a mini family reunion secretly planned by Jeff--what an accomplishment! My three brothers, sister and two sisters-in-law, from Canada, Montana and Bend, cooked in my kitchen, set up slide shows, told family stories and caught up with each other and with me. It was a joyful time as well as a sobering one as the Johnston stoics confronted, each in our own way, the possibility that sooner than normally expected we'll be one less.
Jesse, Valarie, her sweetie and a family friend were also part of the party. I wish you'd dropped by! Join us here for a peek.

Now see, everywhere there are opportunities to continue learning.
"the possibility that sooner than normally expected we'll be one less."
Now condition contrary to fact takes the subjunctive. But in this case, you say "the possibility" so perhaps we are relieved of the subjunctive. Yet even so, "we [will]" sounds much too strong and definitive in context. Might I suggest: "we may" or "we might"? Even "we could."
Many happy returns. And I do mean "many."
Well said, Will, well said.

We send all of our hugs as well and wish we all could have been there. Hope you all didn't get into too much trouble all together again, there weren't enough of the younger generation to keep you in line.
Just one more note, who was that old guy with the santa white beard in the picture of all the brothers and sisters? And where was Alex?
"one less" rhymes with "unless". :-)
Yours in rhyming peebees,
Robink
Happy belated birthday. It was good to see your beautiful face even if it was just in pictures.
Wish I was there, but a snowballs chance in hell that I'd have gotten a word in edgewise (even if I pushed really hard). Am really glad ya'll called me and we'll catch up on Thursday.
